Romania lies in the south-eastern corner of Europe. Bucharest is the capital, and it is home to the Parliament Palace, the second-largest building in the world’s behind only the Pentagon. Is is also the heaviest building in the world. Romanian is the official language, although many other languages such as Russia, English and Hungarian are spoked throughout the country. Romania has a population of 19.41 million. Romania is home to 22,298km of rail network, making it the fourth-largest mass transit network in Europe. Romania is also famous for being the home of Transylvania and Dracula.

When meeting with Romanians, ensure one is dressed professionally. Many Romanians hold degrees from abroad and consider themselves trustworthy. They are aware of international practices, pay respect to foreign partners and expect to be treated the same way. Romanians are punctual to meetings and expect to be treated the same way. As such Romanians are very open and friendly to foreigners.

Health Insurance and the Social Security system of Romania

Romania offers a universal healthcare system. Per the constitution, every citizen of Romania is entitled to free, unrestricted medical procedures. One has to present oneself with a health card to prove that one has paid insurance. If one does not have paid insurance, one still has the right to free emergency medical assistance.

The cost for an employer to hire someone in Romania is a plus of 2.25% to the gross salary.

Working Hours in Romania

Office hours are from 9:00am to 5:00pm, Monday to Friday.

A regular work week is 40 hours.

Overtime of up to 8 hours per week is permitted. Overtime must be compensated with time off. If this is not possible, if shall be paid with an added benefit of 75% to the basic wage.

Vacation in Romania

Romanians are entitled to a minimum of 20 days (4 weeks) of annual leave.

Sick Leave in Romania

When one is sick in Romania, one has to provide one’s employer with a medical certificate within 24 hours of the illness occurring. One is only eligible to sick pay if one has contributed for a minimum of 6 months to the Health House.

The first 5 days are paid by the employer. From the 6 th day onwards, the National Health Fund reimburses the employer. The amount the employee receives varies between 75% – 100% of the employees monthly wage.

Termination/Severance in Romania

When terminating an employee in Romania, this has to be done by written notice. The notice period is 20 days. There is no statutory severance pay unless the employee is part of a trade union or it has been set in a collective agreement.
